If you are a busy adult, self-care is something that most of you struggle with (myself included:).
Our lists are huge and making time for ourselves is something we will do down the road.
The lie we are told is that if we focus on ourselves, then things won’t get done, people will be let down, and the world will go to hell in a hand basket:).
The truth of the matter is that self-care isn’t selfish!
If we allow time for ourselves, the things on our list will actually get more done in a quicker amount of time.
My son, Jeremiah, is always on the go.
He is not a fan of resting and always wants to be playing (which is why he wakes up at 5am daily:).
As he was waiting for me to get ready to go on a bike ride with him, he fell asleep for 3 hours.
His body was exhausted and finally had enough so it forced him to take a long nap.
This reminded me of how easy it is to fall into the trap of always being on the go.
At some point our bodies say enough and force us to rest.
Today I want to share with you 3 things to help you with self-care:
1.) Say No to More Things
It seems like we can be slaves to our calendars.
If they aren’t full, then we aren’t doing enough.
That’s nonsense!
The more we add to our calendars, the more burned out we get, and then we don’t really enjoy the stuff we are doing.
2.) Turn Off Technology Before Bed
This is one that I struggled with for years.
I’d love watching a Dodger game before bed or something on YouTube.
It profoundly messed up my sleep due to my melatonin levels being disrupted.
Now I make a point to turn off my phone by 8pm each night and read instead.
3.) Have a Daily Self-Care Routine
To develop a consistent routine you need to figure out what works best for you.
If you need some help, here are a couple of ideas:
-Take your dogs on a walk while listening to your favorite podcast
-Follow an exercise program (if you don’t have one, I’d be happy to help:)
-Read a book outside on a blanket soaking up plenty of vitamin D
-Taking a long relaxing bath with no interruptions (this is my wife’s favorite)
-Go on a family bike ride
The more you incorporate self-care time into your schedule, the more you’ll thrive and enjoy your life!
